about
This is me playing along with the original recording of my Grandfather's song "Lilooet." The instrumental break was not in the original recording, for that part I am playing both guitar and fiddle. But with some editing magic, I was able to get the sounds relatively close to the quality of the original recording. This track is part of a thesis about how when we engage in music, we are always playing alongside our ancestors, adding to their traditions what we hear in our imaginations, and in that same way, honoring the change that the new generations are here to bring into the world, which is made possible by the continuance of tradition.
The song was written after Joe had spent some time in B.C. meandering the wilds on horseback while visiting his daughter (my mother) Kathi Burnett Somers (then, Tremblay). Kathi was describing to him the way the full moon could light up the entire Frasier River, making it look like one long silver ribbon winding through the Lillooet valley. This description inspired the chorus for the song, "When the moon has turned the Frasier River to a silver ribbon.."
